Fishing tablet vs laptop chartplotter
Clients frequently ask me which of my navigation laptops are most similar to the fishing tablet systems. It is definitely the midrange 10, premium 10, and midrange 12 and premium 12. These are all convertible tablet & laptop units. So “which is better”, you ask? This very much depends on what you’re doing, and I encourage you to contact me so we can discuss it. Below is a little summary which might steer you in the right direction.
Advantage Tablets
- If you need small inland lakes & rivers, the tablets include them free of charge. On the laptops, this option will cost much more.
- Where space is very limited, the tablets offer an excellent solution.
- Mounting a tablet without a flat surface is much easier with articulating arm mount (suction cup, or drill base).
- If you’re trying to get the cheapest possible complete system, it’s hard to beat an 8 inch tablet.
- For the absolute easiest to use system of all, it’s hard to beat the tablets. Having said that, the navigation laptop systems are also very user friendly.
Advantage Navigation Laptops (Toughbooks)
- While tablet displays are reasonably bright, only the Toughbooks are outdoor viewable. Midrange 10 and Premium 10 are waterproof without a case, and have super bright displays.
- If you want to run marine radar, the Toughbooks are definitely the way to go. Tablets currently do not support radar.
- If the largest display is what you seek for your tired old eyes, once again the Toughbooks are available in up to 15.4 inch sizes.
- For traveling an extensive area, vector charts may be the way to go. If you’re planning on circumnavigating or crossing an ocean, the Toughbooks may be the way to go.
- Rough on your equipment? The waterproof Toughbooks can be driven over by a car and survive. Enough said.

Why use a fishing tablet rather than a chartplotter?
My systems can be much more affordable than Garmin, Lowrance, Simrad, B&G, Furuno, Hummingbird, Raymarine, Si-Tex. They will be supported forever with no expiration date! I believe that some of the commercial chart plotter brands gouge their customers. They force clients to upgrade by no longer supporting older units. In addition, they charge exorbitant fees for simple things like a bigger screen size. Please take a look at some other advantages of my units as well.
I am always happy to answer questions, and provide additional information. For example, exact dimensions, video demos of how something works, precise capabilities, screenshots of charts in your area, and more. I configure each unit specifically for you, which takes considerable effort. Therefore, non-defective returns are only accepted within 7 days of receiving the unit and are subject to a 20% restocking fee. Some examples would be: change of mind, didn’t fit the available space, missing functionality, etc. Hence, I would much rather answer your questions before you order so I can confirm it can do what you need. Furthermore, if you’re not sure if the system can do what you need, just ask me or please take a look at the video demos.
